Quiet Time is a unique programme which has been used in schools around the world for over 35 years. The programme involves the implementation of two 15 - 20 minute periods into the school day; one when the students first arrive and one just before they leave. During Quiet Time students practice a very simple, scientifically validated technique called Transcendental Meditation. Teachers and other school staff practice the technique before and after school. The Quiet Time programme including Transcendental Meditation has been introduced into hundreds of schools around the world and into one school in Auckland, New Zealand.
Transcendental Meditation (TM) is a simple, natural, effortless technique practiced sitting comfortably with the eyes closed. The Transcendental Meditation technique allows the mind to settle inward, beyond thought, to experience a silent reservoir of energy, creativity and intelligence found within everyone—a natural state of restful alertness. During the practice, the brain functions with significantly greater coherence and the body gains deep rest. The unique state of restful alertness produced during TM practice dissolves stress and fatigue, promoting balanced functioning of mind and body and more harmonious behaviour.
Scientific research on Transcendental Meditation has shown that the daily experience of this state of restful alertness leads to increased creativity, improved learning ability, higher IQ, better moral reasoning, more efficient brain functioning and a wide array of health benefits—such as normalised blood pressure, lowered risk of diabetes and heart disease, and reduced need for doctor visits.
Over 5 million people worldwide have learned Transcendental Meditation—over 40,000 New Zealanders—including people from all backgrounds, cultures, races, and religions. The Transcendental Meditation technique is not a religion or philosophy and involves no change in lifestyle. It is easy to learn and enjoyable to practice, requiring no effort, concentration or special skills. Any child can learn it. Transcendental Meditation was introduced to the world in 1957 by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. One of Maharishi’s important contributions has been to subject the Transcendental Meditation programme to scientific scrutiny by inviting scientists to conduct extensive research on the practice, thereby establishing the TM technique’s practical benefits on the objective ground of modern science. More than 600 scientific research studies confirming the benefits of the TM technique for mind, body, behaviour, and society have been conducted in 34 countries and at 250 independent research institutions and universities, including Harvard, Stanford, Yale, UCLA Medical School and Otago Medical School.
The Quiet Time programme can be implemented into any public or private school. If you would like to find out how you can get the Quiet Time programme in your school, or if you would like to find out more information please contact us.
